Waffle is one of those things people think is hard, but actually it’s not. I also used to think waffles need special skill or something, but no. If you can mix things in a bowl, you can make waffles.
This is just a normal waffle recipe, nothing fancy. I’m writing it how I actually make it, not like chef style.
What Is Waffle
Waffle is like pancake but cooked in waffle maker. That’s it. Batter is almost same, but shape and texture changes everything. Outside becomes crispy, inside stays soft. Kids love it, adults also eat happily.
Some eat waffle for breakfast, some eat in evening, some eat anytime. There is no rule actually.
Ingredients I Use (Basic Ones)
Most of the time I already have these at home.
-
Maida / all purpose flour – 2 cups
-
Sugar – 2 spoon (add more if you like sweet)
-
Baking powder – 2 small spoon
-
Salt – just little
-
Eggs – 2
-
Milk – around 1 to 1.5 cup
-
Butter or oil – around 1/3 cup
-
Vanilla – optional, if you have
Nothing special here.
Before Mixing Anything
Just check few things:
-
Butter should be melted, not hot
-
Eggs should not be ice cold
-
Waffle maker should be clean
That’s all.
How I Make Waffle Batter
First Bowl – Dry Stuff
Take one big bowl. Add flour, sugar, baking powder, salt. Mix with spoon. Don’t overthink. Just mix.
No need to sift or anything unless you want to.
Second Bowl – Wet Stuff
In another bowl, break eggs. Add milk, butter (or oil), vanilla if using. Mix little bit. No need to beat hard.
Sometimes I even mix everything in one bowl, still works.
Mix Everything Together
Now pour wet mixture into dry mixture. Mix slowly. Batter should not be too thick, not too watery.
If too thick, add little milk.
If too thin, add little flour.
Some lumps are fine. Don’t try to make it perfect.
Heating the Waffle Maker
This part is important.
Switch on waffle maker and let it get hot. Really hot. If not hot, waffle will be pale and soft.
Put little butter or oil on waffle plate so it doesn’t stick.
Cooking the Waffle
Pour batter into waffle maker. Don’t overfill or it will overflow and make mess.
Close lid. Wait around 3 to 5 minutes. Depends on machine. You will see steam first, then steam reduces. That’s usually sign it’s done.
Open slowly. Take waffle out.
How Waffle Should Look
-
Light brown or golden color
-
Crispy outside
-
Soft inside
If it looks white, cook more. If it smells burnt, you cooked too much.
What to Put on Waffle
Honestly, waffle without topping is little boring. Toppings make it good.
I usually add:
-
Honey or syrup
-
Chocolate sauce
-
Butter
-
Banana or apple slices
Sometimes ice cream also, when I feel like cheating diet.
If Waffles Are Not Crispy
This happens many times.
Try this:
-
Don’t add too much milk
-
Let waffle cook longer
-
Use butter instead of oil
-
Don’t stack hot waffles
Stacking makes steam and waffle becomes soft.
If Waffles Become Too Hard
Then maybe:
-
You overcooked
-
Batter was too thick
-
Less fat in batter
Next time add little milk or oil.
Eggless Waffle (If Needed)
If you don’t eat egg, you can skip it.
Replace eggs with:
-
Cornflour + milk
or -
Mashed banana
Texture will change, but still edible and tasty.
Common Mistakes I Also Did Before
-
Opening waffle maker again and again
-
Over mixing batter
-
Using cold waffle maker
-
Adding too much sugar
All these spoil waffle.
Can We Store Waffles
Yes, but fresh is best.
You can:
-
Cool waffles
-
Keep in box
-
Store in fridge for 1–2 days
Reheat in toaster or pan. Not same, but okay.
Waffle vs Pancake (Simple)
Pancake:
-
Soft
-
Cooked on pan
Waffle:
-
Crispy
-
Needs waffle maker
Batter almost same.
FAQs (Simple Ones)
Can I make waffle without waffle maker?
Not really. Shape and crisp won’t come.
Why waffle is soggy?
Undercooked or too much liquid.
Can kids eat waffle?
Yes, very common food.
Is waffle healthy?
Depends how much sugar and toppings you add.
Can I use wheat flour?
Yes, but waffle will be little heavy.
Last Words
Waffle making is not serious cooking. Don’t stress. Even ugly waffles taste good. First time maybe not perfect, second time better, third time you won’t even measure.
Just enjoy making it and eating it. That’s enough.
